Dr. William Boothe with the advent of lasik technology, eye correction with the use of surgery has become more affordable, more convenient and even painless. The accuracy by which eye surgeons have dealt with real eye problems has been remarkable. Patients have been thrilled with results. What a miracle! They can see! There are four different types of eyeglasses available. Reading glasses are worn when working close up. Bifocals are eyeglasses with two points of focus for near vision and distant vision. The top part of bifocal lens is used to correct other eye conditions like myopia or astigmatism while the bottom part is used to correct close up vision. Trifocals have three focusing points; one for near vision, one for immediate vision, and one for distant vision. Progressive addition lenses (PALs) uses different focus points but gradually changes them so that no visual sections are as noticeable as in bifocals and trifocals. Bifocal and monovision contacts are also available. In monovision, one eye is corrected for near vision and the other for distant vision. The brain gradually adapts to using one eye for certain tasks depending on distance.( LASIK DALLAS - DR WILLIAM BOOTHE) A pioneer in the field of refractive surgery, Dr. William Boothe was one of the first cornea specialists to be trained in vision correction techniques during his Fellowship. In addition, he was the first cornea-trained surgeon in the Dallas area to use an FDA-approved Excimer laser for refractive surgery. The delicate procedure of precisely lifting the flap is critical to overall success of the surgery. As we age, the lens of the eyes becomes rigid, loses its flexibility, and thus its ability to focus as well. The exact cause of presbyopia is still under research and debate. One theory is that the fibers in the lens become stiffened and are unable to change shape as well. Another theory is that the lens grows too big and is not able to change shape as well. Other factors such as trauma, occupation, and lifestyle may be factors as well. The laser is programmed prior to each procedure for the ablative "cut" based on the patient's pre-operative refractive error (nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism). Once the laser ablation is completed, the surgeon gently replaces the corneal surface flap to restore surface integrity of the eye. It's as if the refraction is "ground in" to the middle layers of the cornea! The results are often dramatic and very rapid, with most patients seeing well enough to drive a car without correction the very next day. However, the best post-operative visual acuity may not be obtained until 2 to 3 weeks, or in some cases, even a few months, after the procedure. LASIK DALLAS - Dr William Boothe = Dry Eyes can be caused by several factors which include those relating to less tears and less moisture within the eyes. A common cause is aging. As we age we create less productive tears which means less moisturization to the eyes. These tears might also evaporate swiftly. Women approaching menopause especially face dry eyes due to the increase in hormones. Another factor is that some people are not able to generate as much natural tears as needed whether it be from aging, blockage of tear ducts, or from medication that leads to less yielding of tears. This problem oftentimes leads to chronic dry eyes as the person is not able to manufacture tears and the eyes are not sufficiently lubricated. Tears evaporate rapidly, and the eyes are not cleaned properly. Environmental factors can also play a factor in eyes drying up. Examples include dusty air, dry or windy weather, or fumes like cigarette smoke which can evaporate tears much speedily or hamper their effectiveness. This is especially a cause for dry eyes in contact lens wearers as the lenses absorb lubrication and the tear film. Contact lens wearers usually experience dry eyes because they contacts seems to work against moisturization. Numerous contact lens wears regularly require rewetting drops or contact lenses that retain more moisture. Working or entertainment can also cause dry eyes. People who watch TV, use a laptop, or sew for a longer duration may cause eye strain and dry eyes. This is due to straining of the eyes and infrequent blinking and tear formulation. Personal conditions may also cause dry eyes. A deficiency in vitamin A, some medications, and some diseases may also lead to dry eyes. Inadequate sleep or insomnia can also cause dry eyes, as the eyes are not allowed to rest and are apt to dry up faster.

Dr William A. Boothe = Astigmatism - (uh-STIG-muh-tiz-um) An eye condition where the cornea is oval-shaped rather than round. This oval shape has two curves: the steeper one and the flatter one. Each curve refracts light at a different angle, sending it to focus on the retina in two different places, and creating distorted vision. It can be mild, with just blurriness, or more severe, with ghosting and severe blurring. In a glasses prescription, the second number expresses the degree of astigmatism you have, and the next number is the number of degrees in the angle of refraction. For example, a prescription of –4.00 – 2.00x34o states that you have 2 diopters of astigmatism at an angle of 34 degrees

Toric Contact Lenses - Contact lenses designed to correct both myopia or hyperopia and astigmatism. They contain two curvatures at different angles and are effective for astigmatism only if they don’t rotate on the eye. Therefore they have a mechanism which keeps them stable. They can be soft or hard.
    
20/20 - An expression for normal eyesight. The numbers refer to feet (except in countries that use the metric system, where it’s expressed as 6/6, six meters being approximately equal to 20 feet). The first number refers to the distance between the eye chart and the eye being tested. The second number is a comparison of a normal eye and the tested eye. When the second number is 20, that indicates the tested eye can read the small letters on the chart from 20 feet away, as a normal eye can. When the second number is higher than 20, it indicates impaired vision, more impaired as the number is higher. For example, if a person’s vision is assessed at 20/100, it means that this person must be only 20 feet from the chart for it to look as clear as it does to a normal eye 100 feet away.( DR. Abrasion: An abrasion usually occurs when a fingernail or other foreign object rubs across the cornea or conjunctiva and removes some surface tissue. There is a risk of bacterial or fungal contamination and infection following an eye abrasion.
