Refractive Surgery general term referring to many different procedures to correct the refractive error of the eye.( Dr. William Boothe) DR. WILLIAM A. BOOTHE DR WILLIAM BOOTHE - LASIK LASIK EYE - Dr William A. Boothe DR. WILLIAM A. BOOTHE - LASIK DR. WILLIAM BOOTHE - DALLAS Dr William Boothe = LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) is a type of refractive laser eye surgery performed by ophthalmologists for correcting myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatismThe procedure is generally preferred to photorefractive keratectomy, PRK, (also called ASA, Advanced Surface Ablation) because it requires less time for the patient's recovery, and the patient feels less pain, overall; however, there are instances where PRK/ASA is medically indicated as a better alternative to LASIKThe LASIK technique was made possible by the Colombian-based Spanish ophthalmologist Jose Barraquer, who, around 1950 in his clinic in Bogotá, Colombia, developed the first microkeratome, used to cut thin flaps in the cornea and alter its shape, in a procedure called keratomileusis. He also provided the knowledge about how much of the cornea had to be left unaltered to provide a stable long-term resultLater technical and procedural developments included the RK (radial keratotomy) started in the '70s in Russia by Svyatoslav Fyodorov and the development of PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) in the '80s in Germany by Theo SeilerIn 1968, at the Northrup Corporation Research and Technology Center of the University of California, Mani Lal Bhaumik and a group of other scientists, while working on the development of a carbon-dioxide laser, would develop the Excimer laser, where molecules that do not normally exist come into being when xenon, argon or krypton gases are excited. This would form the cornerstone for LASIK eye surgery. Dr. Bhaumik announced his discovery in May of 1973 at a meeting of the Denver Optical Society of America in Denver, Colorado. He would later patent it. Keratoconus a disorder characterized by an irregular corneal surface (cone-shaped) resulting in blurred and distorted images DR. WILLIAM BOOTHE - EYE SURGERY DR. WILLIAM A. BOOTHE - LASIK SURGERY DR. WILLIAM BOOTHE LASIK EYE - DR WILLIAM A. BOOTHE DR. WILLIAM BOOTHE - LASIK SURGERY Variable Spot - A method of applying the excimer laser energy during refractive surgery. The computer that controls the laser is programmed to have it focus on spots of varying sizes across the ablation area, rather than equal-sized flying spots, or in a broadbeam fashion. Anti-inflammatory a medication to reduce inflammation (the body's response to surgery, injury, irritation, or infection).( DR. WILLIAM A. BOOTHE - LASIK DALLAS) DR WILLIAM A. BOOTHE DR BOOTHE A. DR BOOTHE - EYE LASIK DR. BOOTHE DR. WILLIAM A. BOOTHE - DALLAS LASIK Dr. William Boothe = Keratomileusis is the carving of the cornea formerly done with a lathe and blade and now done with an excimer laser. Pupil - a hole in the center of the iris that changes size in response to changes in lighting. It gets larger in dim lighting conditions and gets smaller in brighter lighting conditions Dr. William Boothe DR. WILLIAM BOOTHE - LASIK LASIK EYE - DR WILLIAM BOOTHE DR WILLIAM BOOTHE - DALLAS DR. WILLIAM BOOTHE - LASIK DALLAS Cornea - The clear dome at the front of the eye that is the first element of the focusing system that provides most of the eye's optical power. Broadbeam - The term used for applying the excimer laser to the entire treatment area at one time. It’s the typical way laser treatment is done for myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. See also Flying Spot and Variable Spot( DR BOOTHE) DR WILLIAM A. BOOTHE - EYE SURGERY LASIK DALLAS - Dr William A. Boothe DR. WILLIAM A. BOOTHE - EYE SURGERY DR WILLIAM A. BOOTHE - DALLAS LASIK Dr. William A. Boothe LASIK DALLAS - Dr William Boothe = Dry Eyes can be caused by several factors which include those relating to less tears and less moisture within the eyes. A common cause is aging. As we age we create less productive tears which means less moisturization to the eyes. These tears might also evaporate swiftly. Women approaching menopause especially face dry eyes due to the increase in hormones. Another factor is that some people are not able to generate as much natural tears as needed whether it be from aging, blockage of tear ducts, or from medication that leads to less yielding of tears. This problem oftentimes leads to chronic dry eyes as the person is not able to manufacture tears and the eyes are not sufficiently lubricated. Tears evaporate rapidly, and the eyes are not cleaned properly. Environmental factors can also play a factor in eyes drying up. Examples include dusty air, dry or windy weather, or fumes like cigarette smoke which can evaporate tears much speedily or hamper their effectiveness. This is especially a cause for dry eyes in contact lens wearers as the lenses absorb lubrication and the tear film. Contact lens wearers usually experience dry eyes because they contacts seems to work against moisturization. Numerous contact lens wears regularly require rewetting drops or contact lenses that retain more moisture. Working or entertainment can also cause dry eyes. People who watch TV, use a laptop, or sew for a longer duration may cause eye strain and dry eyes. This is due to straining of the eyes and infrequent blinking and tear formulation. Personal conditions may also cause dry eyes. A deficiency in vitamin A, some medications, and some diseases may also lead to dry eyes. Inadequate sleep or insomnia can also cause dry eyes, as the eyes are not allowed to rest and are apt to dry up faster. Flap & Zap - a slang term for LASIK DALLAS LASIK - DR WILLIAM A. BOOTHE Dr William Boothe DR. WILLIAM BOOTHE - EYE CENTER DR WILLIAM BOOTHE - EYE SURGERY DR WILLIAM BOOTHE - DALLAS LASIK Inflammation is a tissue's reaction to trauma often associated with pain, heat, redness, swelling, and/or loss of function. Inflammation may be caused by mechanical trauma, infections, bacteria, viruses, immune reactions or other causes. Manifest Refraction - The eye examination which determines a person’s degree of refractive error. The patient looks through a phoropter, an instrument with an array of lenses, at the eye chart set first at 20 feet away (for distance vision), then at 16 inches away (for near vision). The optometrist or ophthalmologist changes lenses and asks which ones give the clearest image.( DR WILLIAM BOOTHE - LASIK SURGERY) DR BOOTHE - LASIK EYE DALLAS LASIK - Dr William A. Boothe LASIK EYE - DR BOOTHE DR WILLIAM A. BOOTHE - LASIK Dr William A. Boothe LASIK EYE - Dr William Boothe = Chronic open-angle glaucoma is the most common form of glaucoma in the United States. Typically, open-angle glaucoma has no symptoms in its early stages, and vision remains normal. Clearness as in visual acuity. The most common measure of visual acuity is the Snellen Acuity- completely normal acuity being 20/20 or 6/6 (metric version)amblyopia LASIK DALLAS - Dr William Boothe DR WILLIAM A. BOOTHE - LASIK DALLAS DR. WILLIAM A. BOOTHE - LASIK DALLAS DR. BOOTHE A. DALLAS LASIK - DR WILLIAM BOOTHE Macular degeneration cannot be reversed. Its impact, however, can be reduced. Acuity - (a-KEW-uh-tee) Clarity or sharpness of vision, commonly expressed as 20/20 vision in relation to the Snellen acuity chart. This is the eye chart seen at every eye doctor’s office, with the big E at the top.( DR. WILLIAM A. BOOTHE - DALLAS LASIK) DALLAS LASIK - DR BOOTHE DR BOOTHE A. - EYE SURGERY LASIK EYE - Dr William Boothe DR. WILLIAM A. BOOTHE - DALLAS DR WILLIAM A. BOOTHE - LASIK SURGERY Dr William A. Boothe = Astigmatism - (uh-STIG-muh-tiz-um) An eye condition where the cornea is oval-shaped rather than round. This oval shape has two curves: the steeper one and the flatter one. Each curve refracts light at a different angle, sending it to focus on the retina in two different places, and creating distorted vision. It can be mild, with just blurriness, or more severe, with ghosting and severe blurring. In a glasses prescription, the second number expresses the degree of astigmatism you have, and the next number is the number of degrees in the angle of refraction. For example, a prescription of –4.00 – 2.00x34o states that you have 2 diopters of astigmatism at an angle of 34 degrees Cataract - An opaque or cloudy area that forms in the eye’s lens, impeding vision. They tend to occur with aging, but can also be caused by trauma. Cataracts are treated by the lens being removed and an artificial lens implanted. See intraocular lens. DR. WILLIAM BOOTHE - DALLAS LASIK DR BOOTHE - DALLAS LASIK DR WILLIAM BOOTHE - EYE CENTER DR WILLIAM A. BOOTHE - EYE CENTER LASIK DALLAS - DR BOOTHE Toric Contact Lenses - Contact lenses designed to correct both myopia or hyperopia and astigmatism. They contain two curvatures at different angles and are effective for astigmatism only if they don’t rotate on the eye. Therefore they have a mechanism which keeps them stable. They can be soft or hard. 20/20 - An expression for normal eyesight. The numbers refer to feet (except in countries that use the metric system, where it’s expressed as 6/6, six meters being approximately equal to 20 feet). The first number refers to the distance between the eye chart and the eye being tested. The second number is a comparison of a normal eye and the tested eye. When the second number is 20, that indicates the tested eye can read the small letters on the chart from 20 feet away, as a normal eye can. When the second number is higher than 20, it indicates impaired vision, more impaired as the number is higher. For example, if a person’s vision is assessed at 20/100, it means that this person must be only 20 feet from the chart for it to look as clear as it does to a normal eye 100 feet away.( DR. WILLIAM BOOTHE - LASIK) DR WILLIAM BOOTHE - LASIK DALLAS DR. BOOTHE A. - EYE SURGERY LASIK DALLAS - DR WILLIAM BOOTHE DALLAS LASIK - Dr William Boothe LASIK DALLAS - DR WILLIAM A. BOOTHE DR. BOOTHE A. - EYE SURGERY = Sclera - The outer layer of the eye. (provides protection) Coma - A higher order aberration which makes points of light look like comets with blurry tail-like smudges. It can be diagnosed and treated with wavefront-guided LASIK procedures. DR WILLIAM A. BOOTHE - DALLAS DR BOOTHE - LASIK DALLAS DR BOOTHE DR WILLIAM BOOTHE - LASIK SURGERY DR WILLIAM BOOTHE Abrasion: An abrasion usually occurs when a fingernail or other foreign object rubs across the cornea or conjunctiva and removes some surface tissue. There is a risk of bacterial or fungal contamination and infection following an eye abrasion. Presbyopia - the inability to maintain a clear image (focus) as objects are moved closer. Presbyopia is due to reduced elasticity of the lens with increasing age.( DR WILLIAM BOOTHE - LASIK SURGERY) Dr William A. Boothe LASIK EYE - Dr William Boothe DR WILLIAM A. BOOTHE - DALLAS LASIK DR WILLIAM BOOTHE DR. WILLIAM A. BOOTHE - LASIK DALLAS DR WILLIAM A. BOOTHE - LASIK DALLAS = Corneal Transplant surgical treatment where the patient's cloudy cornea is cut away and a clear cornea, donated by someone who has died, is sewn into its place. Snellen Visual Acuity Chart - one of many charts used to measure vision DR. BOOTHE A. - EYE SURGERY DALLAS LASIK - DR BOOTHE DR. WILLIAM BOOTHE - EYE SURGERY DALLAS LASIK - Dr William A. Boothe Dr. William Boothe Corneal Topographer - A specialized camera-computer system which photographs and prints out a map of the surface details of a cornea. This is done before any LASIK procedure Cornea the clear, transparent cover over the iris and pupil on the front part of the eye. The cornea is the first part of the eye that bends (or refracts) the light and provides most of the focusing power of the eye.( DR. WILLIAM BOOTHE - DALLAS) LASIK EYE - DR WILLIAM BOOTHE DR BOOTHE A. - EYE SURGERY DR WILLIAM BOOTHE - LASIK DR BOOTHE A. DR WILLIAM BOOTHE - EYE CENTER DR. WILLIAM A. BOOTHE - DALLAS LASIK = Retreatment should not be carried out until a minimum of ( specify minimum time) after the initial surgery and the following conditions are met:(specify minimum UCVA and refractive criteria). The retreatment procedure should be described. Refractive stability should be used to determine timing of the repeated surgery. Shallow Anterior Chamber narrowness of the space between the cornea and the iris. DR WILLIAM A. BOOTHE - DALLAS DALLAS LASIK - DR WILLIAM A. BOOTHE DR WILLIAM BOOTHE - LASIK DALLAS DR. WILLIAM A. BOOTHE - DALLAS LASIK DR. WILLIAM A. BOOTHE - EYE SURGERY Myopia the inability to see distant objects clearly. Eye Twitching, for most people, is just annoying, involuntary eye muscles spasm surrounding the eye that go away over time. The spasms usually occur a few times and come back. Spasms that cause twitching on one side of the face are known as hemifacial spasms. These are typically due to some form of irritation to the facial nerve This type of spasm requires visiting your family doctor who may refer you to a neurologist or an eye care professional, in order to determine the cause and what treatment might be appropriate. If your eye is twitching, then you should read about how to stop eye from twitching.( DR. BOOTHE A.) DR. WILLIAM BOOTHE - DALLAS LASIK DR. WILLIAM A. BOOTHE - LASIK DR WILLIAM A.
