Automated Lamellar Keratoplasty (ALK) - A refractive eye surgery that treats myopia. The surgeon uses a microkeratome to cut a very thin shaving or flap from the corneal surface. Then a tiny piece even thinner is removed from the underlying tissue, to flatten the cornea a little, and the flap is replaced. It heals up without any need of stitches.

B scan - An ultrasonic procedure that checks for abnormalities in the eye, and locates foreign bodies within it.

Reis-Buckler’s Dystrophy - An inherited condition where a spontaneous erosion of the cornea impairs vision and causes increased light sensitivity and eye irritation. It involves the surface layer of the cornea (epithelium) and part of the stroma. It can appear anywhere from ages eight to twenty, and becomes more severe after about age forty. Also called Buckler’s Dystrophy and Buckler’s Syndrome.

LASIK DALLAS - DR WILLIAM BOOTHE: Degenerative Myopia - Nearsightedness thought to be hereditary, which may start at birth, or in later childhood. It’s a more severe form of myopia and can lead to blindness. It’s associated with to cataract formation and with retinal changes and can lead to retinal detachment.

Depth Perception - Our ability to judge the relative distances of multiple objects. Each eye receives a slightly different image. The dominant eye looks directly at it and the non-dominant eye looks from a slight angle. The brain compares these two images and arrives at an estimate of their relative distance. Pupil is what appears as a small black dot in the center of the iris and changes its diameter in response to ambient lighting.

Radial Keratotomy is a surgical procedure designed to correct myopia (nearsightedness) by flattening the cornea and is commonly referred to as RK.

Refraction is a test to determine the best eye glasses or contact lenses to correct a refractive error (myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism) OR the bending of light by the use of a lens or other material.

DR BOOTHE: Visual Acuity is simply the clearness of vision or the ability to distinguish details and shapes or objects.

Vitreous Humor is the transparent, colorless mass of gel that lies behind the lens and in front of the retina and fills the center of the eyeball.

Dr Boothe Lasik Surgeon A pioneer in the field of refractive surgery, Dr. William Boothe was one of the first cornea specialists to be trained in vision correction techniques during his Fellowship. In addition, he was the first cornea-trained surgeon in the Dallas area to use an FDA-approved Excimer laser for refractive surgery.
Dr. Boothe was among the first three surgeons in the Dallas area (and one of the first in the country) to use a microkeratome, the instrument that creates the flap during the initial part of ALK and LASIK surgery. The delicate procedure of precisely lifting the flap is critical to overall success of the surgery.
