Laser Assisted Epithelium Keratomileusis - The acronym for LASEK, a variation on LASIK used when the cornea is too flat or too thin for standard LASIK. Instead of using a microkeratome, it uses an instrument known as a trephine, with a finer blade, to make the corneal flap, and then the eye is soaked for a half-minute or so with an alcohol solution. This softens the epithelium so that it can be folded back more safely.

Until recently, contact lenses and dry eyes seemed to come hand in hand. Modern technology, however, has developed several ways for contact lens wearers to deal with dry eyes. When eyes become dry, they can be irritable, bloodshot and in severe cases, vision can become impaired.
Dry eyes occur for a number of reasons, although there is thought to be a particular link between extended contact lenses and dry eyes. Dry eyes are also prevalent with older contact lens wearers as tear ducts become less effective with age. Problems with contact lenses and dry eyes become exacerbated when wearers spend a considerable length of time in front of a computer screen or in an air-conditioned environment.

Why is it so popular? LASIK has advantages over other procedures, including a relative lack of pain afterward and the fact that good vision is usually achieved by the very next day. Dr. Boothe, an instrument called a microkeratome is used in LASIK eye surgery to create a thin, circular flap in the cornea. Another, newer way of making the flap is with a laser.

Only the more prominent surgeons evaluated it for the first couple of years, surgeons such as Dr. Christenberry, Dr. Dello Russo and Dr. Nordan - the more successful surgeons, in general. Dr. Joseph Dello Russo became convinced of the safety of the laser and ordered two machines which were delivered on Feb. 2002. "After the second day of using the Intralase, I never used a blade again."
But doctors who were not Dr William Boothe familiar with the laser were very reluctant to accept it, because they doubted that it would be safer and mostly because it was so expensive to buy (about $450,000) and use - paying royalties of about $160 per eye. Dr. Dello Russo says that "it took about two solid years before the laser began to catch on and its safety was recognized.

Wavefront - Technology used to detect and measure higher order visual aberrations. These are the ocular aberrations other than the lower order aberrations of myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism, which can be detected by a traditional eye examination. Some examples are glare, halos, and starbursts.
